A RAINDROP’S KISS

Every inhale dragged the taste of wet soil into her mouth. She let it linger on her taste buds before she exhaled a small cloud of her own with humid breath. A precious puff that swayed and swerved in the dancing breeze for a moment, a mere moment, before it faded away.

She reached out past the edge of her umbrella to catch a single, delicate raindrop on her fingertip. It slipped down her palm leaving a glistening trail, etching itself into her skin.

In a voice no louder than a pin drop, she whispered to the droplet a single plea.

The water seeped into her bare wrist like a translucent vein. She could feel its cold kiss soaking into her spongy bones as blood and water melded to one. Her skin peeled away from melting flesh and dripped down, down.

Down.

And not one passerby spared a thought to the lone umbrella rocking gently back and forth in the puddles.
